Training

Several
years ago I had the opportunity to observe a gentleman by the name of
Dave Seay at the Madison, WI horse fair, and he "woke me up."
Later that day I was privileged to chat personally with Dave and was invited
to a mustang adoption where he would be working with a young mustang over
the course of the day. We attended that clinic and my horse operation
and techniques were changed forever. Since then I have been to many clinics,
read countless articles, and watched endless videos. There is no end to
the new education process.
A
few years ago I started training my colts to excel in my chosen
discipline: Trail Riding. We developed a training program with the goal
of quickly and efficiently producing a quality, reliable trail horse.
Several years ago we offered this program to the horse riding public on
a
part-time basis. Since that time our bookings have grown to the point
where we are now ready to devote full attention to producing top quality
trail horses.
As
soon as a horse
arrives on our farm, it's training begins. We spend a couple days in
the round pen becoming acquainted and usually by the third day we're
riding. Before the first week is out, we're out on the trails, where
the real education begins. We do no arena riding. Everything is done
outdoors, in all kinds of weather. Over the 30 day training period,
we will put between 80 and 100 miles on a horse. It will be hauled to
different state parks and trailheads to broaden the experience. We also
take them on a weekend trail ride at least once during their visit to
expose them to larger crowds, overnight picketing, etc., getting them
accustom to the full trail ride routine. When a horse leaves here, it
goes forward, backward, and sidepasses (or as Johnny Lyons says, "goes
North, South, East and West.") It will neckrein, load and unload,
and do front quarter and hind quarter turns. It will have a solid foundation
and be ready for it's owner to confidently continue the training process.

This
is what a few of our past customers have to say of their purchases and training:
Kelly
Bartels, Monroe, WI "I contacted Steve to put 30 days on my 4 year
old Fox trotter mare. He asked me what I wanted at the end of those
30 days, and I got exactly what I asked for and more. My mare is quiet,
well behaved, and has perfect trail manners. Steve not only took the
time to tell me what he did while he had my mare, but also took the
time to work with the mare and myself so that I was comfortable with
her skill level. Steve was a pleasure to work with, and I will not hesitate
to utilize his expertise in the future."
Jerry and Linda Rutledge, Hillsdale, IL
Jerry says, "I was completely satisfied. Steve broke my 3 year
old mare
for trail riding and to the picket line. I learned some things about
riding skills and handling horses by trail riding with Steve and Tam
and
also made some new riding friends."
Linda
says, "Could not wait to send my gelding to Steve when Jerry got
his mare back! Steve took him as a 2 year old.....and just 2 weeks
later I got to ride him myself at a saddle club ride Steve had him on.
Awesome!! If you want to get your horse back ready to hit the trails
and go camping, send him to Steve!"
Joanne Wainwright, Morrison, IL
"Steve took my 3 year old Foxtrotter filly into his training program
April 2003 and had her for 30 days. I am a very timid rider but have
been able to take my horse on many trail rides, used her to park cars
at
the county fair, and even rode in a parade. Steve trained the horse
to
do the kind of riding I like to do. Even though I'm a timid rider, I
still like to ride the rougher trails and want a horse I can feel
confident on. I have that kind of horse now. Thanks Steve."
Deb
Byers, Stacy, MN wrote, "Tam, here is an update on Jazz. He is
now 16.2 hands. He is one of the best trail horses we have ever
owned. He does extremely well on the trail and as the pictures show he is
just as good in the show ring. We enjoy riding him everywhere.
We get comments all the time on how beautiful he is, and there is always
someone trying to buy him, but he will not be for sale! We just
love him. Thanks for selling us such a great horse!!!"
Kathy
L Babbs-Van Buskirk, CrownPoint, IN wrote, "I met Tam and Steve while
searching for a way to "fix" my appaloosa. I had recently been
thrown and had misgivings about "getting back on my horse". After
a couple of trail rides it became apparent that I needed a different
horse."
It was my good fortune to meet and
ride with Tam and Steve, as they assured me that they could find a horse
to fit me. Tam generously agreed to sell me her mare, Raven.
She had originally planned on keeping Raven for the rest of her life, so
I was honored and thrilled at the opportunity to purchase this lovely
blue roan.
Raven
is well mannered, extremely intelligent, and the perfect trail horse
for me. Raven has restored my confidence so that I can continue
doing what I love, trail riding.
Tam
and Steve are honest, personable and have the unique ability to match
the right horse with the right person. If it wasn't for their
kindness and knowledge, I might have given up.
Dana
Toebben, Villa Hills, Ky wrote,"I wanted to thank you so much for
selli ng me Diaz! She is absolutely gorgeous, and to top it off,
she has such an incredible personality. We are lucky to have
her. You made our buying experience very positive by being
flexible,
professional, prepared, honest, and caring. I know that our filly
was loved and cared for before she came to us. You took care of
the details such as sending food with her to help with her transition
slowly and healthily to a new diet. If anyone you deal with in
the future would like to talk with me about my purchase experience,
just give them my number. I would recommend your horses and you
to anyone."
An old horseman friend of mine once told me, "The only difference
between a good horse and a bad one is an hour a day for thirty days."
Dave
Seay agreed but added, "That hour has to be spent doing the right
things and doing them consistently."
At
the Trail Pal Trail Horse Farm, we are doing the right things with
patience and consistency. If you have a young horse that you want to
get started the right way, consider sending him to the Trail Pal Trail
Horse Farm. You won't end up with just another horse, You'll have a
TRAIL PAL.
